• Padres' Donovan Solano: Signs MiLB deal with San Diego

  The Padres signed Solano to a minor-league contract Monday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Solano spent the 2023 season with the Twins, slashing .282/.369/.391 with five home runs and 38 RBI over 450 plate appearances. He'll report to Arizona, and the 36-year-old will look to work his way up through San Diego's minor-league system.

Solano is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Detroit, but with the MRI on his knee coming back clean, the Twins are optimistic he'll avoid a long-term absence. Minnesota hasn't ruled out Solano requiring a trip to the injured list, however, but manager Rocco Baldelli said that the veteran utility man is considered day-to-day for the time being while he waits for the swelling in his ankle to subside, according to Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

He continues to hit toward the top of the order versus lefties but has not been able to maintain a consistent spot against righties.

  Solano went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and played seven innings at second base in Monday's 4-1 loss to the Giants. Heading into Monday's game, Solano had been scheduled to start at first base, only for the Twins to scratch him from the starting nine prior to first pitch without an explanation. The Twins' decision to scratch Solano may have had something to do with the Giants deploying a right-hander (John Brebbia) as their opening pitcher, as the righty-hitting Solano went on to pinch hit for the lefty-hitting Edouard Julien when lefty primary pitcher Sean Manaea came on in relief of Brebbia. Solano should continue to see most of his opportunities moving forward as a short-side platoon player.
