Player Outlook
Blake Snell walked an incredible tightrope during a contract year in 2023, as he posted an MLB-best 2.25 ERA despite a league-worst 13.3 percent walk rate, securing the second Cy Young Award of his career. He excelled in spite of the free passes thanks to a 0.75 HR/9, 5.8 H/9 and 84.9 percent strand rate, which was also aided by the Padres' strong defense (42 DRS). Given all the free baserunners, it's not exactly a surprise his 3.77 xERA and 3.62 xFIP don't mesh with the actual results. The 31-year-old finished with 180 innings, falling one frame short of setting a career high and marking just the second time in his eight MLB seasons that he's topped 130 innings. Snell was a boon for fantasy managers in 2023 with his run prevention and punchout numbers (31.5 percent strikeout rate), but regression almost seems guaranteed between his durability and walk concerns. Even so, the left-hander's 3.56 ERA in 51 starts during the 2021-22 seasons presents a strong floor.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: To throw again Friday

Snell could throw up to five innings in his next appearance, which is scheduled for Friday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The Giants have yet to decide where Snell will throw Friday, but it's a good sign to see him continuing to ramp up after signing late in spring training. It's already been reported that the southpaw won't be ready for Opening Day, though how much regular-season action he'll miss remains to be determined. The club could have a better idea following his upcoming outing.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Slated for MiLB appearance Sunday

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Friday that Snell will pitch in a minor-league game Sunday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Snell threw his first bullpen session Thursday since signing with the Giants and over the weekend will get into some game action. The left-hander has already said he will not be ready for Opening Day as he ramps up his workload following a late signing. It's not clear when he might make his regular-season debut, but the Giants will determine Snell's next steps following Sunday's outing.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Won't be ready for Opening Day

Snell said Wednesday that he will not be ready for Opening Day, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Snell said he got stretched out to 60 pitches while throwing on his own, but that's without the adrenaline of facing major-league hitters. The left-hander will throw a bullpen session Thursday and the Giants will set up a schedule for Snell after that. While the reigning National League Cy Young winner figures to be ready to make his first regular season start early on, a more specific timetable will be available following Thursday's mound session.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Expects to pitch in game soon

Snell said Wednesday that he will throw a bullpen session Thursday and expects to pitch in a game soon, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The Giants, understandably, are not ready to commit to when Snell might be ready to pitch for them, but it sounds like he could get in a Cactus League start before the schedule runs out. Whether that would be sufficient enough for him to be ready to take a turn when the regular season begins isn't clear at this juncture, but more will be known about Snell's timeline in the coming days.

  • Giants' Blake Snell: Inks two-year deal with Giants

Snell agreed to a two-year, $62 million contract with San Francisco on Monday, which includes an opt-out after the 2024 season, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Snell finally has a landing spot after several teams balked at his asking price over the offseason and into spring training. He'll benefit from one of the more pitcher-friendly home ballparks in Oracle Park and join 2023 National League Cy Young finalist Logan Webb at the top of the Giants' rotation to form one of the deadliest one-two punches in all of baseball. It remains to be seen how soon Snell will be able to ramp up for the 2024 season with only 10 days remaining before Opening Day, but he just tossed four simulated innings Friday and could make an appearance in a game situation later this week, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

  • Blake Snell: Throws for scouts Friday

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that Snell threw four simulated innings in Seattle in front of scouts Friday, including representatives from the Giants and Astros. Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported earlier Friday that Astros owner Jim Crane is still interested in adding Snell after not being able to acquire him at the trade deadline last year. The left-hander has been tied to a number of teams this offseason and is open to signing with a team on a short-term contract, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Snell posted a 14-9 record across 32 starts with a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB over 180 innings last season with the Padres.

  • Blake Snell: Could be target for Houston

The Astros remain engaged in the starting pitching market and Snell might become their top target, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Rome notes that owner Jim Crane coveted both Josh Hader and Snell at last year's trade deadline. While a deal didn't come together for either at the time, the Astros signed Hader this offseason and it sounds like they could circle back on Snell. General manager Dana Brown was asked about the lefty Thursday and replied, "as long as Snell is on the market, we check in to ask what is the latest. Nothing new as of now." Snell would provide a major boost to a Houston rotation that will be without Justin Verlander (shoulder) at the start of the season.

  • Blake Snell: Open to short-term contract

Snell's agent Scott Boras revealed Monday that the two-time Cy Young winner is open to signing with a team on a short-term contract, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Nightengale notes that Snell was seeking a long-term deal in excess of $250 million at the beginning of free agency, though it appears the reigning NL Cy Young winner has shifted from that stance. Boras also represents Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman, both of whom elected to sign short-term deals with options to opt out at the end of the 2024 season. Snell seems open to going that route as he looks to stick on a roster with Opening Day approaching. The 28-year-old left-hander registered a 14-9 record over 32 starts with a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB over 180 innings.

  • Blake Snell: Remains in contact with Yankees

Snell and the Yankees discussed a potential contract Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The Yankees have reportedly put multiple offers on the table for Snell this offseason, but the two sides don't currently appear to be making much progress toward a deal. The left-hander won the NL Cy Young Award with the Padres last season after he posted a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB over 180 innings, but a league-worst 13.3 percent walk rate and just two seasons over 130 frames in his MLB career have likely played a part in his asking price not yet being met.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Strong again in no-decision

Snell allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday. Snell was again sharp, firing his fifth scoreless outing of six or more innings in his last six starts. He ended up with a second straight no-decision after the Giants got to Robert Suarez in the eighth inning. Snell lowered his ERA to 2.25 with a 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB through 180 innings over 32 starts this season. He's tentatively lined up for a road start versus the White Sox this weekend, but the Padres may not push their ace for one more outing since their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread after Monday's loss.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Fires seven hitless frames

Snell did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four walks over seven scoreless innings against Colorado. He struck out 10. The Padres got another incredible outing from Snell on Tuesday, as he fanned 10 Rockies across seven innings without allowing a single hit. However, the Padres failed to put up any runs until the ninth inning, eradicating Snell's hopes for a fifth consecutive win. Over his last five appearances (32 innings), Snell owns a 0.56 ERA and a 43:17 K:BB. He'll look to continue his hot streak during his next start, which is projected to come against the Giants at Oracle Park early next week.

Snell (14-9) earned the win Wednesday over the Dodgers, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings. Snell picked up his seventh straight quality start, and he's kept runs off the board in three of his last four outings. This sharp start lowered his ERA to 2.43 with a 1.22 WHIP and 217:93 K:BB through 167 innings over 30 starts this season. It was also the first time since June 22 that Snell didn't walk multiple batters. The southpaw is projected for a home start versus the Rockies next week.

Snell (13-9) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win over the Astros on Friday. Snell gave up runs for the first time in three outings, but he still delivered his sixth consecutive quality start. Over his last three starts, he's posted a 25:12 K:BB across 19 innings. Despite a walk rate that's been among the highest in the majors all year, Snell continues to put together solid outings and has a 2.52 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 209:92 K:BB through 161 innings over 29 starts. The southpaw is projected for a challenging road start versus the Dodgers next week.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Throws six scoreless innings

Snell (12-9) allowed three hits and four walks while striking out eight over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Giants on Saturday. Snell has walked multiple batters in 13 straight starts, but he hasn't given up more than three runs in any of them. In eight of those starts, he's walked four or more batters. The southpaw's 5.2 BB/9 is tied for the worst of his career with that of his rookie season, but he's still managed to generate a major-league-best 2.50 ERA. He's also at 201 strikeouts through 155 innings, which makes this Snell's second 200-strikeout campaign. He's projected to make his next start in Houston.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Fans nine in win

Snell (11-9) allowed two hits and five walks over seven shutout frames Monday, striking out nine and picking up a win over the Cardinals. Snell's command was shaky again with five free passes and two wild pitches, yet he continues to dominate. It was his first scoreless appearance since July 30 and he lowered his ERA to 2.60 through 149 innings. Over his last 18 outings, Snell has posted a terrific 1.38 ERA with a 145:58 K:BB. The NL Cy Young candidate is currently expected to face the Giants at home this weekend.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: No run support in loss

Snell (10-9) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Marlins. The Padres mustered just three hits and two walks for the game, giving Snell virtually no run support. He was able to come away with his third straight quality start, but he's started to come back to earth with 10 runs allowed over his last 23 innings. For the season, the southpaw has a 2.73 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 184:80 K:BB through 142 innings over 26 starts. Snell is projected for a favorable road start in St. Louis early next week.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Secures 10th win

Snell improved to 10-8 after allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Orioles. Snell has now given up two or fewer runs in all but one of his last 16 outings. The southpaw was able to limit the damage to a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a Ryan Mountcastle solo home run in the sixth. Snell is now at a 2.65 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 176:78 K:BB through 136 innings over 25 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Marlins next week.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Fans seven in win

Snell (9-8) yielded two runs on two hits and four walks over six innings Friday, striking out seven and earning a win against Arizona. After giving up a run in the first inning, Snell held the Diamondbacks off the board until serving up a solo homer to Ketel Marte in the sixth. Snell's dominant stretch continued as he allowed fewer than three runs for the 14th time in his last 15 starts. He's registered a 1.16 ERA during that stretch, giving him a 2.63 ERA alongside a 171:76 K:BB through 24 outings. The only downside is that he's walked at least three batters in eight consecutive starts. Snell is expected to face the Orioles at home next week.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Strikes out eight in no-decision

Snell allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out eight over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Saturday. Snell's impressive run of 13 starts without allowing more than two runs came to a close, though it happened against a tough division rival. The southpaw was in line for the loss until the Padres rallied ahead in the eighth inning. Snell's 1.30 WHIP and 164:72 K:BB aren't the most encouraging marks, but he's allowed just 12 homers in 23 starts this season to offset an ugly 5.2 BB/9. That's helped him maintain a 2.61 ERA through 124 innings on the year. Snell is lined up for another challenging start on the road in Arizona during next weekend's series.

  • Padres' Blake Snell: Punches out nine

Snell (8-8) allowed one unearned run on four hits and four walks over five innings Sunday, striking out nine and earning a win against Texas. Snell has been outstanding for the last two months despite his inflating walk rate. He registered a 42:26 K:BB through 32 July innings but gave up just two earned runs. He's given up two or fewer runs in 13 straight starts, resulting in a terrific 0.73 ERA with a 108:41 K:BB through 74 frames over that span. Snell's next outing is projected to be at home against the Dodgers.
