Montgomery (1-0) earned the win Friday, allowing one run, four hits and no walks over six innings against the Giants. He struck out three. Montgomery looked sharp in his season debut, stifling the Giants all night and allowing just four baserunners. The left-hander wasn't even at his peak as his fastball velocity averaged 93.3 mph, down 1.7 mph from last year's average. However, given that Montgomery signed with Arizona on March 29, he still has some work to get into midseason form. His next start is scheduled to be at home against his former team, the Cardinals.... Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Recalled for season debut
The Diamondbacks recalled Montgomery from Triple-A Reno on Friday. Montgomery made two tune-up starts in Triple-A, surrendering nine earned runs across 7.2 innings while striking out nine batters and walking five. While his minor-league numbers aren't exactly encouraging, the 31-year-old southpaw is still expected to be a quality contributor to Arizona's starting rotation after posting a 3.20 ERA across 188.2 innings between St. Louis and Texas last year. Ryne Nelson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Set for season debut Friday
Montgomery will make his Diamondbacks debut Friday in San Francisco, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery was not sharp in his final tune-up start with Triple-A Reno on Saturday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He served up two home runs in the outing. Montgomery got his pitch count up to 71, though, and as long as he bounces back with no issues he'll join Arizona's rotation next week. It will be either Tommy Henry or Ryne Nelson bumped from the rotation when Montgomery returns, and Nelson stated his case to stay Saturday with six innings of one-run ball versus the Cardinals.... Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Makes debut for Reno
Montgomery allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three over four innings for Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Montgomery, who threw 60 pitches, made his debut in game action after signing with the Diamondbacks late in spring training. The goal was get through four innings and 65 pitches, so mission accomplished on both fronts for the left-hander. A normal five-day routine lines up Montgomery to throw again Friday (April 12) then next Wednesday (April 17). The pitcher earlier this spring targeted his Arizona debut for April 19, which falls outside the five-day routine, given his appearance Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Slated for Triple-A start Sunday
Montgomery is scheduled to make a start with Triple-A Reno on Sunday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery tossed three innings and 50 pitches in a simulated game Monday at the Diamondbacks' spring training facility and is ready to move on to an official game setting next. The left-hander has said he's aiming for April 19 as the date of his first start with the big club, which would point to one additional start in the minors after Sunday before he joins Arizona.... Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Officially signs, sent to Triple-A
The Diamondbacks announced Montgomery's one-year, $25 million contract Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Reno. The left-hander's deal also includes a vesting option for 2025 that's worth up to $25 million, depending on how many starts he makes this season. After being without a team for all of spring training, Montgomery will build up at Triple-A before making his Diamondbacks debut, which he said will likely come around April 19, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com.... Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Reaches deal with Arizona
Montgomery agreed to terms on a one-year, $25 million contract with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Montgomery had been rumored to be in talks with the Yankees regarding a potential reunion, but he will instead join the Diamondbacks with only two days left before the start of the regular season. Adding the 31-year-old southpaw will provide the D-backs with insurance in their rotation with Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) set to miss the first several weeks of the year. Because Montgomery was without a team all offseason and therefore missed spring training, he will likely sit out the first couple of turns through the rotation but should be able to make his Diamondbacks debut within a few weeks. Montgomery's new deal also includes a vesting player option for 2025 if he starts at least 10 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Jordan Montgomery: In contact with Yankees
The Yankees have resumed contract discussions with Montgomery, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. After losing out on the Blake Snell sweepstakes, the Yankees remain in search of a starter to make up for the loss of Gerrit Cole (elbow), who is in line to miss the first several months of the season. There is reportedly still a gap between what Montgomery is asking for and what the Yankees are offering him, but the two sides may be pressured into reaching a deal quickly with roughly a week remaining before Opening Day.... Jordan Montgomery: Could sign short-term deal
Montgomery's agent Scott Boras told Bob Nightengale of USA Today on Monday that the left-hander is open to signing a short-term contract similar to Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger. Per Nightengale, Montgomery opened free agency looking for a long-term deal north of $170 million, but it appears he has softened on the idea of a short-term contract with Boras informing teams as much. A short-term deal with the same structure as Chapman and Bellinger would allow Montgomery to bet on himself for one season and re-enter the open market for 2025. He helped the Rangers to a World Series title in 2023 after posting a 3-1 record over six playoff games with a 2.90 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 31 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Jordan Montgomery: Meets with Boston
Montgomery recently had an online meeting with the Red Sox, Buster Olney of ESPN reports. The veteran left-hander is the second-best arm left on the market behind reigning Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, but neither pitcher appears on the cusp of a deal. Montgomery put together the best season of his career with the Rangers in 2023, posting a 3.10 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 166:48 K:BB across a career-high 188.2 innings. He followed those numbers up with a 2.90 ERA in six playoff outings, playing a key role in Texas' World Series title.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Starting Game 2 of World Series
Montgomery will be the Rangers' starter for Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. After allowing just two runs over 14 innings across three appearances versus the Astros in the ALCS, Montgomery will follow Game 1 starter Nathan Eovaldi in the World Series rotation. Including the postseason, Montgomery has put up a 2.62 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through 92.2 innings since being traded to the Rangers.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Named Game 5 starter
Montgomery will start Game 5 of the ALCS on Friday against Houston, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Montgomery shut down the Astros in Game 1, throwing 6.1 scoreless innings while striking out six batters and walking one en route to a victory. Aside from a shaky outing against Baltimore in the ALDS, Montgomery has been solid in the postseason with an overall 2.08 ERA through 17.1 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Fans six in win
Montgomery allowed five hits and one walk across 6.1 scoreless innings to earn the win in Sunday's 2-0 contest against the Astros in Game 1 of the ALCS. He struck out six. Montgomery faltered in his previous start against Baltimore in the ALDS, but he was able to right the ship in this one to help cover the bulk of the shutout. The southpaw faced a tense moment in the fourth inning with the bases loaded but managed to strike out Martin Maldonado to keep the Astros off the board. Sunday's win marked the second for Montgomery this October and his first playoff start with at least six strikeouts. He now has a 2.08 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 13 strikeouts across 17.1 innings this postseason.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Named Game 1 starter
Montgomery will start Sunday against the Astros in Game 1 of the ALCS, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Montgomery began the postseason with a seven-inning shutout performance against Tampa Bay in the first game of the AL Wild Card Series, but he followed that up by allowing five runs (four earned) in four innings in Game 2 of the ALDS versus the Orioles. Despite his poor performance against Baltimore, Montgomery still holds a solid 2.55 ERA, albeit with a 1.53 WHIP, in his postseason career.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Allows five runs in no-decision
Montgomery did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 11-8 victory over the Orioles in Game 2 of the ALDS, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk across four innings. He struck out two. Montgomery was unable to replicate his success from his prior postseason start. The southpaw loaded the bases in the first inning, then allowed an RBI single to Aaron Hicks that put the Orioles on the board. He was spotted a seven-run lead by the third inning but let things get tighter again in the fifth by allowing a home run to Gunnar Henderson. Montgomery now has a 2.55 ERA and 1.53 WHIP across 17.2 innings with 14 strikeouts for his career in the postseason.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Lined up for ALDS Game 2
Montgomery will start for the Rangers in Game 2 of the ALDS on Sunday at Baltimore. Andrew Heaney is on tap for Game 1, presumably in tandem with Dane Dunning, and then it'll be Montgomery in Game 2 and likely Nathan Eovaldi in Game 3. Montgomery posted a 0.67 ERA and 22:5 K:BB over his final 27 innings (four starts) in the regular season and worked seven shutout frames in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series this past Tuesday versus the Rays.... Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Fans five to earn win
Montgomery allowed six hits across seven scoreless innings to pick up the win in Tuesday's 4-0 victory over the Rays in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series. He struck out five. Coming off a season where he mustered a career-best 3.20 ERA across 188.2 innings, Montgomery carried that momentum with him into the postseason. The southpaw looked sharp in the contest, picking apart the Rays lineup to earn the first postseason win of his career. Tuesday's outing marked the fifth quality start in a row for Montgomery dating back to the regular season, and the fourth time in that sample in which he logged seven innings.... See More ... Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Solid in no-decision
Montgomery allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Thursday. Montgomery's lone mistake was a solo home run to Julio Rodriguez in the fourth inning. While he had a chance at the win, the Rangers' bullpen denied Montgomery the victory when the Mariners produced a walk-off in the ninth inning. The southpaw has pitched to a 2.79 ERA over 67.2 innings with the Rangers, and he's at a 3.20 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and 166:48 K:BB through 188.2 innings over 32 starts this year when accounting for his time with the Cardinals. It's safe to assume he'll be part of the Rangers' postseason rotation if they can secure a playoff spot.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Tosses seven scoreless frames
Montgomery (10-11) earned the win over Seattle on Saturday, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six batters over seven scoreless innings. Montgomery silenced Seattle's bats throughout the contest, as the Mariners didn't manage to collect multiple hits against him in any inning. The southpaw continued a dominant three-start stretch during which he has allowed just one run while posting a 17:3 K:BB over 21 frames, turning things around impressively after yielding 11 earned runs over 9.1 innings during his first two outings in September. Montgomery will likely make one more regular-season start, which tentatively lines up to take place in Seattle on Thursday.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Jordan Montgomery: Strikes out eight in no-decision
Montgomery didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 4-2 win over the Red Sox, striking out eight while allowing one run on five hits over seven innings. Montgomery turned in another excellent outing and has now worked seven innings apiece in his last two starts. He's allowed just one run between those outings, after surrendering 11 runs in his previous two starts. The southpaw is 9-11 on the season with a 3.38 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 155:44 K:BB across 30 starts (175.2 innings) between the Rangers and Cardinals.
