  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Signs with SD

Johnson signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Dec. 21. Johnson has slashed .148/.209/.213 across 67 plate appearances in his major-league career, but his .828 Triple-A OPS from last season is enough for San Diego to take a chance on him. Johnson should have a chance to make the Padres' Opening Day roster based on the team's lack of outfield depth, but the 28-year-old will most likely begin the year at Triple-A El Paso.

  • Bryce Johnson: Heading elsewhere

Johnson elected free agency Thursday. Johnson was outrighted off the Giants' 40-man roster a month ago and has now decided to look for a gig elsewhere. The 27-year-old outfielder posted just a .422 OPS over 67 plate appearances across the last two seasons with San Francisco.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Clears waivers

The Giants outrighted Johnson to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. Johnson will stick around in the organization after going unclaimed off waivers when the Giants designated him for assignment last week. The switch-hitting outfielder has appeared in 30 games at the big-league level in 2023, slashing .163/.229/.256 with one home run and three stolen bases across 48 plate appearances. Johnson should continue to play fairly regularly at Sacramento for the rest of the season.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Loses 40-man spot

The Giants designated Johnson (undisclosed) for assignment Tuesday. Johnson recently sustained an unspecified injury at Triple-A Sacramento that kept him out of the lineup for a few days and took him out of the mix for a call-up, but he had since returned to action for the club and played in five games last week. Though he's healthy again, Johnson will end up losing his spot on the Giants' 40-man roster with San Francisco activating Mitch Haniger (forearm) from the 60-day injured list Monday. Johnson, 27, heads into DFA limbo with a career .148/.209/.213 batting line in 41 major-league games. He's put up an .820 OPS with seven home runs and 14 steals in 50 games this season at Triple-A.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Called up as 27th man

The Giants recalled Johnson from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday to serve as the team's 27th man. With Monday's game against the Reds spilling into Tuesday, the Giants will get to bring up Johnson for Tuesday's regularly scheduled contest. Johnson holds just a .485 OPS in the majors this season and will almost certainly return to Triple-A after the game is over.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Sent back to Triple-A

San Francisco optioned Johnson to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Johnson has slashed just .163/.229/.256 in 30 games (48 plate appearances) this season at the major-league level. Scott Alexander (hamstring) is coming off the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Nabs another steal

Johnson drew a walk, stole a base and scored a run in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mets. Johnson received only one plate appearance despite starting the game -- he was lifted for Joc Pederson in the fifth inning. This was Johnson's second start since he was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on June 22. The speedy outfielder is up to three steals, one home run, three RBI and seven runs scored through 48 plate appearances. He's gotten into 30 games, but he primarily works as a pinch runner and defensive replacement.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Posts steal as pinch runner

Johnson stole a base as a pinch runner in Friday's 5-4 win over the Mets. Johnson has started just one of the last eight games since he was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, even with injuries again piling up in the Giants' outfield. He could get more of a look while Michael Conforto (hamstring) is sidelined, however. Johnson has two stolen bases, a home run, three RBI and six runs scored over 47 plate appearances this season.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Optioned to Triple-A

Johnson was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday. Johnson has managed just a .502 OPS across 25 games at the big-league level this season. The Giants will announce a corresponding move prior to Tuesday's game in Colorado.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Swipes bag, scores twice

Johnson went 0-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored in Monday's 14-4 win over the Pirates. Johnson made a rare start in center field with Pittsburgh sending southpaw Rich Hill to the mound. Since his May 11 recall, Johnson has gone 4-for-20 with three walks, two RBI and four runs scored over 13 contests. Now that Austin Slater's back from a hamstring strain, playing time is likely to be even thinner for Johnson, and it's very possible he could head back to Triple-A Sacramento once Joc Pederson (hand) or Thairo Estrada (wrist) are ready to return from the injured list.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Recalled from Triple-A

The Giants recalled Johnson from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The 27-year-old outfielder will replace Austin Slater, who has landed back on the injured list with another left hamstring strain. Johnson went 3-for-20 (.150) in a 10-game stint with the Giants last month and probably isn't worth fantasy consideration despite his good speed.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Activated, returns to Triple-A

The Giants reinstated Johnson (concussion) from the 7-day injured list Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento. Johnson was placed on the IL on April 14 after experiencing concussion symptoms but was able to make a pair of rehab appearances with Sacramento over the weekend, going 2-for-5 with a double and two stolen bases. Prior to suffering the head injury, Johnson had been handling a short-side platoon role in center field, but Austin Slater has since beaten Johnson back from the IL and looks poised to handle those duties moving forward. Johnson will stick around at Sacramento, where he should get the chance to play on an everyday basis.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Lingering concussion symptoms

Johnson is still experiencing concussion symptoms, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. He has passed concussion tests, but Johnson is apparently still dealing with some lingering symptoms. The outfielder has been out since mid-April after suffering a concussion when he collided with the outfield wall.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Still dealing with symptoms

Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporter's before Friday's game against the Mets that Johnson (concussion) is still experience some symptoms, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Johnson was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list last Friday, and while the outfielder was cleared to resume workouts, he's not ready to come off the list. It's likely at this point the 27-year-old will need a rehab assignment before he rejoins the Giants, and there's no timeline for when that will occur.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Resumes light workouts

Johnson (concussion) was recently cleared to resume light workouts, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. While Johnson isn't believed to have resumed full baseball activities since being placed on the 7-day injured list Friday, he at least appears to have made progress on some level since being diagnosed with the concussion. He probably won't be ready to return from the IL when first eligible this weekend and may need to complete a rehab game or two before the Giants are comfortable reinstating him.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Placed on concussion IL

Johnson was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Johnson suffered a concussion Wednesday when he crashed hard into the outfield wall while making a fantastic catch. It's another blow to a Giants outfield that has been hit hard by injuries in the early going. There is no timetable for his return.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Evaluated for concussion

Johnson was evaluated for a concussion after crashing into the outfield wall Wednesday against the Dodgers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Johnson made a spectacular leaping catch in the fourth inning of Wednesday's game, but he was slow to get up after running into the wall. The results of the evaluation will provide a better idea of how long Johnson will be sidelined.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Pulled after crashing into wall

Johnson was removed from Wednesday's game against the Dodgers after making a leaping catch and crashing into the outfield wall, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Johnson came into the game to fill in for Michael Conforto, who was pulled in the fourth inning with an apparent injury. Now the Giants, who are quickly running thin on outfielders, will turn to LaMonte Wade to take over in right field.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Contract selected

Johnson's contract was selected by the Giants on Saturday. Johnson generated some buzz this spring by going 12-for-12 on the basepaths in the Cactus League and appeared to be trending towards a roster spot, but he ended up missing out. He didn't have to wait long, however, as the Giants optioned Brett Wisely to clear a roster spot after just one game. Johnson managed a below-average batting line (97 wRC+) as a 26-year-old in Triple-A last year, and the fact that the Giants kept him off the Opening Day roster suggests they're not particularly invested in him, but his wheels could give him fantasy relevance if he earns enough playing time.

  • Giants' Bryce Johnson: Left off Opening Day roster

The Giants reassigned Johnson to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. Even though all five members of the Giants' Opening Day outfield (Mike Yastrzemski, Michael Conforto, Joc Pederson, Blake Sabol and Matt Beaty) are left-handed hitters, the team opted not to keep the switch-hitting Johnson in the fold as a potential platoon option. Johnson did his best this spring to make the decision to cut him a tough one, as he finished the Cactus League slate with a .310/.423/.405 slash line and a perfect 12-for-12 mark on stolen-base attempts.
